Dallas-Fort Worth Business Group on Health selects Koan for population health analytics

Employer coalition will leverage data to improve quality outcomes and cost on musculoskeletal conditions

The Dallas-Fort Worth Business Group on Health (DFWBGH) announced its selection of Koan Health to provide analytic services in partnership with leading area healthcare providers as part of its Innovative Quality Healthcare Collaborative (IQ Healthcare). This initiative is designed to improve quality and reduce costs for treatment of targeted conditions with an initial focus on lower back pain.

In this partnership, Koan Health will provide the DFWBGH analytics for healthcare providers and employers on nearly 750,000 local employees of DFWBGH member companies. Their healthcare data is provided by Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and Cigna. Participating providers include Baylor Scott & White’s HealthTexas Provider Network, Catalyst Health Network, Spine Team Texas and Texas Back Institute.

DFWBGH aims to bend the cost curve of healthcare while helping providers deliver better care. With area employers spending approximately $4 billion annually on healthcare for their North Texas employees alone, the savings could be significant. Using Koan Health’s proprietary analytic platform for population health, Datalyst|Population solution, the collaborative will enable providers access to patient data that typically is not provided at the plan level.

“Our purpose is to help DFW employers and providers work together to create improved care processes that deliver high quality healthcare for targeted conditions,” said Marianne Fazen, DFWBGH Executive Director. “Initially, we’re focusing on improving diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Koan Health’s population health and data analytic solutions will equip providers with insights to improve care for all patients who suffer from this condition.”

According to Koan Health, this engagement is a reflection of effective collaboration between employers and providers. “The DFW Business Group on Health is a great example of local provider and employer healthcare leadership coming to the table and committing to improving the health of the community,” said Jeff Hayes, Koan Health co-founder and executive vice president. “They are leveraging our analytic capabilities to study and share better practices. We view data as the nexus between provider-employer collaboration, and this DFWBGH initiative is a natural step in supporting the evolution of value-based care.”

DT Nguyen, chairman and chief executive officer for Koan Health, commented that Koan Health’s platform is especially well-suited for value-based care. “To fully realize better health outcomes with lower costs, access to data is essential, but a deep understanding of clinical and financial data is critical to making meaningful improvements,” said Nguyen. “I’m very excited to see the positive impact we can make with the DFWBGH that will undoubtedly result in healthier populations and long-term value to patients.”
