“Koan” honors the philosophy and contributions of Hippocrates, the renowned Greek physician often called the father of medicine. Hippocrates trained physicians in a unique, patient-centered approach to health and healing at his school on the island of Kos, near the western coast of Turkey.

The school emphasized observing and documenting the patient’s family history, environment, and condition. By recording symptoms—like complexion, pulse, fever, pains, movement, and excretions—and treatments in great detail, Hippocrates and his students created valuable records to guide ongoing care and teach new physicians.
